How long can I stay in the UK on a Skilled Worker visa?
Your visa can last for up to 5 years before you need to extend it. You’ll need to apply to extend or update your visa when it expires or if you change jobs or employer. You can apply to extend your visa as many times as you like as long as you still meet the eligibility requirements.
After 5 years, you may be able to apply to settle permanently in the UK (also known as ‘indefinite leave to remain’). This gives you the right to live, work and study here for as long as you like, and apply for benefits if you’re eligible.
What are the requirements to obtain a Skilled Worker visa?
Under the current system, the requirements are as follows:
You need to:
- have a valid certificate of sponsorship for your job
- show you’re being paid an appropriate salary for your job (usually at least £25,600 per year, unless it is a shortage job occupation, you are under 26 years old, you have a PhD, or some other specific exceptions)
- do a job that’s on the list of eligible occupations
- prove your knowledge of English
- demonstrate that you are able to support yourself in the UK. Usually, you will have to that you have at least £1,270 in your bank account. You will need to have had the money available for at least 28 days in a row. Day 28 must be within 31 days of applying for this visa.
Can I bring my family with me on a Skilled Worker visa?
Yes, it is possible for dependants to join you in the UK. They will have to pay separate application fees, and adhere to certain additional requirements.
What jobs are on the shortage occupation list?
The list can be found here. If your job is on the shortage occupation list, not only will you salary threshold be lower, but your application fees will also be reduced to £464 if you’re staying for up to 3 years and £928 if you’re staying for more than 3 years, regardless of whether you apply from within or outside of the UK.
Is there a fee?
Yes. If you are applying for a Skilled Worker visa to stay in the UK for up to three years from outside the UK, the basic cost will be £610. If you are applying to switch into the Skilled Worker category from inside the UK, the price is £704. If you are applying to stay in the UK for longer than three years, the price goes up to £1,220 if you apply from outside the UK, and £1408 from inside the UK. The fees are heavily reduced for shortage occupations. If your job is on the shortage occupation list, your application fees will be reduced to £464 if you’re staying for up to 3 years and £928 if you’re staying for more than 3 years, regardless of whether you apply from within or outside of the UK.
You will also have to pay the healthcare surcharge as part of your application, which is currently set at £624 per year. In addition to all this, you must have at least £1,270 in your bank account to show you can support yourself in the UK. You will need to have had the money available for at least 28 days in a row. Day 28 must be within 31 days of applying for this visa
