When do you need a UK Student visa?
If you want to study in the UK on a course for over 6 months, you’ll need to apply for a Student visa. Following Brexit, both EEA and non-EEA nationals must meet two key requirements to be eligible to apply for a Student visa:
- Obtaining an unconditional offer from a Home Office-sponsored education provider
- Receiving a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies
Overview of UK Student visa requirements
If you want to apply for a Student visa, you must meet the following requirements:
- Acceptance into a UK Home Office-licensed educational institution.
- Financial means to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).
- English language proficiency to the required course level.
- A Tuberculosis test result indicating that you are free from the disease.
- Evidence of your academic qualifications.
- Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your chosen education provider.
- Payment of the UK Student visa fee.
What documents are needed to apply for a Student visa?
If you are eligible for a student visa, you will need to demonstrate you meet the requirements for the visa. This can be done by providing supporting documentation with your application including:
- Your current passport or travel document.
- Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies from your chosen education provider.
- Evidence you can pay for your studies and financially support yourself (for example, bank statements or written consent from your sponsor if they have agreed to financially support you for your course fees and living costs).
- An Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate if your chosen course requires it.
- Tuberculosis test results, if you are a national of a country that necessitates having one.
- Parent consent if you are under 18, for your visa application and your arrangements in the UK.
The UK government may also require additional information or documentation from you depending on your circumstances. It’s important to carefully review the UK student visa requirements and guidelines on the UK government’s visa website.
Please note the UK student visa process and processing times can vary depending on your circumstances, so it’s important to apply for your visa well in advance of your intended travel date. If you are not sure of the best time to apply, please book a consultation with us.
Tips to apply for a Student visa
- Financial preparation: You need to demonstrate that you can financially support yourself (and any dependents) during your stay. This usually means having a specific amount of money in your bank account for a set period of time.
- Health and insurance: Depending on your country of residence, you may need to have a tuberculosis (TB) test. You will also need to pay the immigration health surcharge as part of your application.
- Apply on time: The earliest you can apply is 6 months before your course starts if applying from outside of the UK. If you are applying from inside of the UK, then you can only apply up to 3 months before your course starts. UK student visa processing times can be delayed during busy periods and a delay could mean you miss the start of your course.
- Choose your course carefully: The UK Home Office can reject an application if they don’t think the student is genuinely intending to study. Make sure the course you choose aligns with your previous studies and future career goals.
- Understanding the academic progression rule: If you are applying for further studies in the UK, the course must be at a higher academic level than your previous course or study unless there’s a credible professional or academic reason.
- Maintain communication with your university: Your university, as your sponsor, has obligations to the Home Office. Keeping them informed of any changes or problems can help prevent misunderstandings that could affect your visa status.
Graduate visa
After you have graduated from an undergraduate or postgraduate course you will be able to stay in the UK using a Graduate visa. This is a separate visa status which you will need to apply for before your Student visa expires. The Graduate visa will enable you to look for work and live in the UK.

Yes, as an international student on a UK Student Visa, your dependents – usually your spouse/partner and your children under 18 – can apply to join you in the UK if certain conditions are met.

How long will the application take to be processed?
If you apply for an application from outside the UK, it may take three to four weeks to be processed. If you make an application from inside the UK, it may take longer, about eight to twelve weeks.

What can I do if my UK Student Visa application is refused?
If a Student Visa is refused, then—depending on the reasons for refusal—there are two options available: An administrative review or to re-apply.
An administrative review is available if the Home Office made an administrative mistake when deciding to refuse your application, for example, if they did not consider the evidence you provided.
If the Home Office processed your application properly but nevertheless refused your application, then it is likely that re-applying will be the best option. A second application will allow you to make the changes outlined in the refusal. If you are refused, it is recommended you speak to us to decide the best method of challenging the Home Office.
