Requirements for an adult dependent relative visa

The adult dependent relative visa is for close family members to join you in the UK if they require long-term care and financial support due to illness, disability, or age.

It can be complex to satisfy the requirements of this visa depending on the family circumstances and we suggest you seek legal advice before making an application. However, the main requirements for making this visa application are:

You are a British or Irish citizen, are settled in the UK with indefinite leave to remain, settled status or permanent residence, are from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein and have pre-settled status or you have protection status in the UK.
Your family member makes the application from outside the UK.
Your family member (the applicant) is your parent, grandparent, brother, sister, son or daughter.
Your family member is 18 years old or over.
Your family member needs long-term care to do day to day personal and household tasks because of illness, disability, or age.
The long-term care your family member requires is not available or affordable in the country they live in.
If your family member is your parent or grandparent, they must not be in a relationship with a partner unless their partner is applying at the same time.
You can accommodate and care for your family member for the whole time you have permission to stay in the UK or for 5 years if you are a British or Irish citizen or are settled in the UK.

Duration of adult dependent relative visa

The duration of this visa depends on the status of the person the family member is applying to join in the UK:

If you are British, Irish or settled in the UK, the leave for the family member will be unlimited.
If you have pre-settled status, the adult dependent relative visa will last until your permission to stay in the UK expires. An application for indefinite leave to remain for the family member will need to be made at the same time as you.
If you have protection status in the UK, the adult dependent relative visa will last until your permission to stay in the UK expires. An application for indefinite leave to remain for the family member will need to be made at the same time as you.
