British Nationality

British citizenship can be acquired automatically, by registration, or by naturalisation. British citizens are not subject to immigration control. This means that they can enter and remain in the UK unconditionally. We can advise you on whether you qualify for registration or naturalisation as a British citizen, as well as help you throughout the application process.

Who is automatically a British citizen?

A child born in the UK before 1 January 1983 is automatically a British citizen.

A a child born in the UK will also automatically be a British citizen if they are born to a parent who is:
1. a British citizen, or
2. settled in the UK at the time the child is born (e.g. the parent has indefinite leave to remain or settled status), or
3. a member of the UK armed forces

Additionally, a person born in a British colony before 1983 will automatically be a British citizen if they were a citizen of the UK and Colonies on 31 December 1983, and if they had the "right of abode" in the UK (meaning the right to live and work in the UK freely) at that time. Additionally, if at least one of the parents of a child born in the UK is an EU or EEA citizen, they may automatically be British depending on when they were born.

British citizenship can also be passed on by descent, but only for one generation. This means that children born abroad to parents who are British otherwise than by descent, are automatically British and do not need to register as such.

If none of the above applies to you, you may qualify to be a British citizen either through the process of registration, or acquire British nationality through naturalisation.

You may also be able to acquire a visa based on your ancestry; but you will not necessarily become British. If you are a Commonwealth citizen aged between 18 and 65, and one of your grandparents was born British, you may be eligible for such visa. If this is the case, you can get a five-year visa which then leads to settlement when that visa expires, and ultimately you can apply for British citizenship through that route.

We can advise you on all of these paths to citizenship. If you think you may be eligible for Registration as a British citizenship, click here. If you want to naturalise as a British citizen, the relevant advice is available here.
