Maintaining a UK student visa

While you’re studying in the UK on a student visa, it’s important to maintain your visa status. Here are some key points to ensure you do so successfully:

  • Respect your work rights: your student visa allows you to work in most jobs, with limitations on hours per week during term time (usually 10-20 hours, depending on your course level). You are also not allowed to be self-employed or engage in business activity. Make sure to stay within the rules and do not work more hours than you are permitted.
  • Attend your course regularly to meet the requirements. If you miss classes without a good reason, your education provider might report you to the UK Home Office, which could lead to your visa being curtailed.
  • Inform your education provider if there are any changes to your circumstances. This includes changes in your contact details, or if you decide to change your course.
  • Check your visa expiry date and no not overstay your visa. If you wish to stay in the UK longer, apply for a UK Student visa extension or switch to a different visa in good time before your current visa expiry.
  • Keep your in a safe and secure place, including your passport, BRP, bank statements, educational certificates, and your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. You might need these for future visa applications or to prove your identity.

Remember, if you do not meet the terms of your visa, this could lead to severe consequences for you, including deportation from the UK, bans on re-entering the UK, or refusal to extend your student visa or obtain a Graduate visa. If you want to apply for a UK student visa extension in the UK, keep within the rules of your current visa.

You can extend your Student visa from inside the UK to enable you to pursue further studies. You must have an unconditional offer on a course with an educational provider sponsored by the Home Office. You must also have a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies for the new course which must be at a higher academic level than your current course. Extending a student visa in the UK can be difficult, speak to us if you want to know how to extend your student visa in the UK.

Graduate Visa

After you have graduated from an undergraduate or postgraduate course you will be able to stay in the UK using a Graduate visa. This is a separate visa status which you will need to apply for before your Student visa expires. The Graduate visa will enable you to look for work and live in the UK for up to two years or three years for PhD graduates.
